Examples of 4-H Project Work

We are so proud of our talented Winnebago County 4-H youth and want to show off their talents. Check out what our youth have been working on this year and get ideas for your 4-H Journey!

2020 Spotlight Stage

4-H members are encouraged to develop their public speaking and communication skills through demonstrations, speeches and performances at their monthly club meetings. Corresponding 4-H projects include Communication Arts (speaking, demos, creative writing & more), Performing/Theatre Arts (performances), and Youth Leadership. Youth in the Exploring (typically 3rd to 5th graders) and Cloverbud (K5-2nd grades) projects are encouraged to try activities in all areas, including giving presentations at club meetings.

The “Spotlight Stage” is an annual event held at the Winnebago County Fair that allows youth to share their demonstrations, speeches and performances with the public. In 2020, we offered youth a virtual opportunity for youth to show off their talents on the “stage” for your enjoyment.

2020 Chalk on the Boardwalk

The youth of the 4-H Ambassador program sponsor a “Chalk on the Boardwalk” competition at the Winnebago County Fair annually. 4-H Ambassadors are youth in grades 6 and up who promote 4-H to the community and encourage existing 4-H members to try new activities and projects.

Chalk on the Boardwalk promotes the 4-H program in general, as well as the life skills of creativity, teamwork (for group entries), communication and personal expression. Corresponding 4-H projects include Communication Arts, Art (or Visual Arts), Youth Leadership, Exploring (typically 3rd to 5th graders) and Cloverbud (K5-2nd grades).

2020 Winnebago County Fair Showcase

The Winnebago County Fair is put on by the Fair Association each year. 4-H youth (along with youth from other community organizations) “exhibit” their work from their project areas. Youth exhibits are the final product of skills they learned in their youth organization. Youth meet with/learn from certified judges and earn ribbons & premiums (prize money) in competitive classes. 4-H youth work hard throughout the year raising & training animals, growing crops and perfecting skills in over 30 different areas from foods and sewing to woodworking and science. The County Fair is the culminating experience of a year of hard-work and an event that many of our youth look forward to all year!

For 2020, youth were able to submit their project work for a virtual Showcase put on by the Winnebago County Fair Association. You can view youth projects by Department area on Facebook (Note: the Fair Association is using groups to help manage the safety and positive experience for the youth participants, so you will need to have a Facebook account and “join” each group to view exhibits). To see a listing of all departments currently available for viewing, see the Winnebago County Fair Facebook Groups Page.

A website (non-Facebook) version of the Showcase will be available on the Winnebago County Fair Website in mid-November.
