Some messages are typed.
Some are handwritten.
All are from a neighbor who cares.
What if a few kind words from a stranger arrived in your mailbox on exactly the day you needed them?
You Matter Mail is an anonymous message exchange that spreads kindness, hope, and positivity across Winnebago County. Community members write encouraging notes that are shared with others. Paired with postcard designs created by local artists, these notes are mailed throughout the community. Every postcard carries a simple but powerful message: you matter.
Research on Kindness
An act of kindness is “benevolent and helpful action intentionally directed toward another person. Kindness is often considered to be motivated by the desire to help another, not to gain explicit reward or to avoid explicit punishment.” 1
In simple terms, acts of kindness are things we do for others because we care. We do them without expecting anything in return. Sometimes, helping someone else is the reward itself.
Being kind does not just help others; it helps us, too. Studies show that doing kind things can help lower stress and improve mood. People who regularly practice kindness often experience:
- Less stress
- Fewer feelings of sadness and anxiety
- More happiness
- A greater sense of connection with others
- Higher self-esteem
- More satisfaction with life
Even small acts of kindness can make a big difference. Research shows that kindness helps both the person giving it and the person receiving it. A thoughtful message can:
- Brighten someone’s day
- Help people feel seen and valued
- Remind us that we are not alone
- Build a sense of belonging
- Strengthen connections in our community
In a world where many people feel stressed, lonely, or overwhelmed, even a few encouraging words can have a lasting impact. That is why small acts of kindness, like writing a positive message to a stranger, matter.
