It’s national Food Safety Education Month and National Family Meals Month.  A great way to start the school year off right is to remember that food safety is the foundation of a delicious family meal.  The Story of Your Dinner offers creative tools and messages to frame food safety throughout the chain of prevention — including the important role consumers play when preparing food at home.  There are recipes (also in Spanish) with easy food safety instructions for hot chocolate cookies, butternut squash skillet chili, five-ingredient honey mustard salmon, sheet pan flank steak, and slow cooker chipotle carnitas.  Each recipe has a video and recipe, both in English and in Spanish.  Recipes include easy-to-follow food safety instructions to help family start the school year off with food safety in mind.  All information is linked through The Story of Your Dinner web page.

Multiple studies show that when consumers follow recipes that incorporate basic food safety instructions, they significantly increase food safety behaviors.  For tips on writing recipes that promote food safety, see the Safe Recipe Style Guide.  Wishing everyone a food-safe school year.
